Strategies for getting the perfect Oak Island vacation property experience:

Sticking to your rental home budget:

  • In the Southport area, The earlier your group can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation rentals are reserved very early. Booking your rental property six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
  • Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. To book the largest rental home within budget, we recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property management companies typically offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Southport visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have discounts for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by selecting your vacation dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. A Most Steller Place: Bright and Airy Home with Ocean Views has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible online. If they are not listed, reach out to the property manager before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is right for your vacation group.
  • Some properties allow pets, but others don't. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.
  • If there's a certain Southport attraction you love, search for homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Know before you go:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your .
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, television set or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents lots of problems.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Note any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a wonderful time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
