Visitors who crave a really good burger and a beer in a super casual environment should make a beeline to Winnies Tavern. Located in a relatively quiet section of Wilmington, with a slightly rustic exterior, Winnies is laid-back but friendly, and is a hidden gem of sorts with a big line-up of some of the best burgers off the beach.
Established in 1962, Winnies has been a local hang-out for generations, and new waves of visitors and residents alike continue to discover this booming burger joint. The menu is basic, but tempting, with an array of burgers, (including bacon cheeseburger, Jalapeno cheeseburger, and BBQ bacon burger varieties), sandwiches, and a couple of side selections. Don’t let this simple menu fool you, however, as the burgers are, in many locals’ minds, out of this world. Patrons will want to get a big helping of regular or sweet potato fries too, or opt for the onion rings, which are another Wilmington favorite. There are also a large range of domestic, imported and craft brews available to wash down the big burgers, and to fully satisfy a pub-style craving for hearty food and drink.
An easy-to-miss icon that’s worth a second look, Winnies Tavern will wow visitors who adore the basics – burgers, fries, and a good beer.
