About this Property

General summary;

Mermaid Crossing, Suite 2 has a stellar location to relax and relax ALL year round! This first floor unit/second row home sits just across the street from a beach access and is less than a hundred steps to fun in the sun! The suite is roughly four blocks from downtown Carolina Beach and everything that is has to offer.

Amid the COVID-19 concerns, our suites offer key-less entry, to minimize person to person contact. We have implemented new protocols for the current circumstances to welcome our visitors to a safe and tidy environment. We have added a multistage system air treatment system with UV light to reduce airborne bacteria, germs, viruses, plant pollen, dust and mold pores. As a result, we no longer give linens. We want to be able to give our valued visitors with a safe memorable beach hideaway experience.

The space;

The suite is located in the heart of Carolina Beach and walking distance to downtown and all of its attractions. The location is a brief walk from the Carolina Beach Boardwalk, eateries, and local stores (don't forget Britt's Famous Donuts)! If you like adventures, the marina is also a few blocks away where you can take an offshore fishing trip or event boat out for a sunset sail. Camping more your thing? Come with the 4X4 and drive (and camp) on the beach at Freeman Park, located on the North End of the island. The Carolina Beach Lake is close by, hosting the Farmer’s Market every Saturday, FIREWORKS every Thursday, and summer outdoor movies on Sunday (on a huge inflatable screen in the middle of the lake!). We welcome you to sit back, relax and savor yourselves because that's exactly what the beach is for!

These suites are a mixture of the original “period” construction and old world beauty, with a kiss of shabby-chic modernity and today's technology because hey, there’s got to be something for everybody! Each suite has its own distinct traits, quirks, and characteristics.

The entry to this 1 bedroom, 1 bath suite opens up into a family room combined with an open dining area and entirely supplied kitchen (stove+oven, refrigerator). The kitchen is outfitted will all of the basic preparing and dining silverware one can expect (plates, bowls, cups, silverware, etc.). In addition, there is a microwave, toaster, and coffee maker ready to help make yourself at home (and on Vacay!). Courtesy shower/shampoo, and conditioner are left in the bathroom of each suite as well as a roll of TP, garbage bags, dish soap, a broom, and sponge in each kitchen.

Most bedroom beds consist of a new encased 8” memory foam/cooling gel composition bed because we want all of our visitors to be calming when it comes time to recharge. The pullout couches that can fit/support a memory foam pad are also accommodated with such! (Always bear in mind, although peaceful, a pullout couch/futon for a longer-term tenant may/may not give ideal support!) Remember, linens are NOT included, however, you can bring them from home with you, buy them (Wal-Mart in Wilmington), or rent them (Oceanside Linens & Units).

There are 2 intelligent TVs (with approx. 25 channels through the Charter Spectrum cable) along with an ORBI router WIFI computer connection for when it's time to sit back and appreciate some movies or shows after a long day at the beach! There is complimentary Netflix to watch movies. We do not give a pin for the Roku TVs so please do NOT request one. We also have some games to savor some family game time when the weather is bit dreary for the beach. Sometimes however, these items are removed from the suite and not replaced and we do not realize it (tsk tsk!).

If you notice something we’ve bragged about missing please let us know!!!

The outdoor shower is located on the lower left of the building to help get that sand off of those toes!

Guest access;

Guests have full access to their own private suite (never shared) along with a respective outdoor space, patio, balcony, or yard. Each suite can vary slightly in archetype but what’s private to each guest or is a common area for all to share is effortlessly recognizable. Feel complimentary to reach out for any specific needs or clarifiers! Each guest will also have access to one assigned parking space. For additional spaces, please refer to our list of parking suggestions.

Other things to note;

-ALL suites are non-smoking (including vaping) and a heavy cleaning/repair charge can result if not adhered to.

-Linens (sheets/towels) are NOT part of the suite rental. If you prefer to bring your own or rent linens, we partner with “Oceanside Linens & Units” for any visitors looking to rent a linen package (sheet sets, towels, etc.) as opposed to bringing or buying your own. Although the hyper link will be blocked by this site, a simple web search can yield their contact information. They will deliver directly into the suite in advance of your stay!

-Quiet(er) hours begin at 9:00pm EST. We host many families of all ages so we ask all our visitors to be considerate, and enjoy the heck out of yourselves!

-NO BBQ’ing on ANY decks or porches. This is a massive fire hazard and is fineable (along with removing smoke/Co2 alarms). We work extremely hard to keep all of our visitors safe, and sometimes that takes teamwork!

-Parking: Please refer to your welcome e-mail for specifics with regards to parking. We have one designated space that come with each rental. OVERSIZED trucks and cars will always have tight fits on the island wherever they go (just an FYI!). For additional spaces, please refer to our local parking lot list.

-For a complete FOODIE RECOMMENDATION list, TV instructions, local Flora and Fauna, etc., please refer to the welcome binder located in each suite. Here are a few misc. additions’ we’ve been inquired about often this past summer prior to renting;

-Nearest Laundromat: Melissa’s Laundry @ 702 S Lake Park Blvd Carolina Beach NC 28428

-Nearest Fresh Seafood (prepare yourself): Blackburn Brothers Seafood @ 440 N Lake Park Blvd Carolina Beach NC 28428

**Animals (where applicable)**

-April 1st through September 30th, dogs are allowed on the beach during restricted hours BEFORE 9:00 a.m. and AFTER 5:00 p.m. Dogs are not allowed on the beach between 9AM-5PM.
October 1st through March 31st, dogs are allowed on the beach during all hours.

-Please always consider TRAVEL INSURANCE from your respective renting site or vendor to help protect your $ in case of inclement weather or last min. travel complications (court, illness, etc.). These items are NOT returnable scenarios, regardless of scale unless the unit itself is compromised. If that does happen, we will do our absolute most polished to find you alternative housing. When advanced enough notice is supplied with regards to a cancellation request, we try and refill the suite to help a renter in need break their rental agreement. If we can, we help break said lease regardless of cancellation policy for a full refund. LIFE HAPPENS to us all. But a tough day at the beach is better than a tough day most everywhere else!-Carolina Beach Town Hall supplies, where available, beach wheel chairs that can traverse the sand without charge. Please reach out to the Recreation Center for additional information.

The neighborhood;

The building itself is one row away from the sea, and two rows in from the Intracoastal Waterway. The unit is set four blocks from downtown Carolina Beach with its stores, activities and dining. There are fireworks during the summer every Thursday nighttime, Movies at the lake each Sunday nighttime, and local fairs around the lake each Saturday morning (refer to for additional info!). Carolina Beach is a mix of friendly locals, snowbirds, and visitors all looking to hideaway the inland and enjoy the sand, surf, and ambience. We really have an amazing community!

Carolina Beach and the surrounding neighborhood offers an array of sights and activities to enjoy while here. Some of these examples are (but not limited to) a subtle beach hike through Carolina Beach State Park, Finishing on the Kure Beach Pier, Kayaking to one of the many islands surrounding the Intracoastal Waterway, watching canons blast during a historical reenactment at the Fort Fisher State Historic Site, or petting some Sting Rays at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. This doesn’t even include the aweing scenery of Airlie Gardens, and our very own battleship (USS NC) in Wilmington! Perhaps more appealing and less “experience” is your speed. Our own local Brewery (Good Hops) along with a round of Frisbee golf may be a great time.

And between the beach and Downtown Wilmington, boy do we have FOOD, Festivals, and good times!

Getting around;

Food, dining, and a multitude of outdoor activities are all well within walking distance. Downtown Carolina Beach has a number of vendors (such as Pleasure Island Units @ 2 N Lake Park Blvd Carolina Beach NC 28428 and Tony Silvagni Surf School @ 101 Cape Fear Blvd Carolina Beach NC 28428) that offer golf carts, paddleboards, surfboards, kayaks, and bicycles for rent as an alternative to driving. Taxi’s and Uber’s are always available for an assist when needed as well throughout the island! You can catch a Ferry to Southport in Kure Beach @ 2422 Fort Fisher Blvd S Kure Beach which leads to another ferry to Bald Head Island where NO CARS are allowed!

Walk, crawl (hopefully mainly the children!), bicycle, swim, paddle, drive, Uber… you name it.

Wallet-Friendly Tips

  • Many property managers and vacation rental houses provide Southport area printed travel catalogs which include deals, either offered independently by merchants, or utilizing a partnership between the property management company and the vendor itself. These guides can provide a good start to your rental home search.
  • Are the vacation dates changeable? The off-peak seasons frequently offer incredible rates on weekly rentals.
  • A number of property management companies and owners offer price reductions for active duty and veteran members of the U.S. Armed forces, or repeat guests of the same property. Make sure to confirm with vacation rental company to see if your travelling gang qualifies for a reduced price.
  • Some homes are particularly suited for particular groups of travellers. Large event homes are ideal for weddings, receptions and corporate escapes. Some homes appeal to wildlife enthusiasts. Other properties are positioned close to nightlife. If there's a certain Southport activity that you love, be on the lookout for rental properties that cater especially to you.
  • Property management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance coverage. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the basic stay rate, offers guests reimbursement of their rental expenses for any missed resulting from medical emergencies or hurricanes, in addition to ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or expenses, like an unforeseen hotel stay or additional fuel. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforseen occurs (heaven forbid!).

General Rental Home Tips & Tricks

Many people are shocked to discover the number of vacation rentals are offered in their area of interest. Vacation home accommodations have gained in popularity with the rise of online search sites like Tripadvisor and VRBO.

Vacation rentals are commonly owner operated or managed by property management companies. For property owners not directly engaged in the management of their rental, management companies are critical in assisting travellers with making reservations, checking-in, cleaning, and any routine service problems that may occur.

Seasoned Southport vacationers have discovered a few tips and tricks throughout the years with regards to renting rental homes, however many newcomers will be delighted to discover that many of these "tips" are in plain sight, if you know where to look.

How to find and reserve the right vacation home:

Before you start to book "This first floor unit/second row home sits just across the street from a beach!", examine our short list of things to consider.

The Earlier, The Better

Southport rental properties book many months (and up to a year) in advance. Reserving your vacation property 6-12 months before your travel dates is highly recommended, when possible. Many families decide to start their search over Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holiday gatherings.

Find your Spot and Decide Dates

Start by picking which specific area of Southport you would like to browse, and the choose travel dates.

Just How Many Beds?

Keep a list of attendees. How many beds and bedrooms will you need? Be aware that most rentals advertise maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in the home's living room. You'll need to determine what is most appropriate for your company. Precise descriptions of bedrooms and beds are commonly available online. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before you reserve the home.

Stay on a Budget

The majority of rental properties are marketed with a price range. Confirm the cost for your desired trip. It might be at the high end of the range. Be sure to get cost-sharing commitments from company well before booking a costly rental. Usually, just one person in the group will be liable for making the full reservation and collecting each family member's share.

Let's Discuss Amenities

What home features is your group interested in? Is a screened-in porch a necessity? Will the unit need to be oceanfront, downtown, or close to shopping? Are items like beach chairs, gas grills, beach umbrellas, carts or coolers at your disposal and included with your rental home charge? Gather a list of "necessities and wishes" from your company to help filter your search to the most suitable rental.

Special Issues

Commonly the older generation has problems with stairs. Make sure to remember and inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs..

Your Puppy Deserves a Holiday, Too

Remember to include your companion! Animal friends are welcome at a number of rental homes, but policies differ. Many restrictions might eliminate a prospective rental. Make certain to study descriptions and contracts carefully. Additional fees or costs may be applied to your contract. If in doubt, ask the property manager and get it in writing.

The best places to Search

A number of websites exist to match guests with property owners.. Together with Homeaway, VRBO and Tripadvisor, we suggest searching Google for "Southport local rentals" for local rental management companies. In addition to offering distinctive properties, local agencies provide exceptional service..

Negotiate the Price

Re-read the description to make sure the vacation home has everything that you need. If it is something is missing, the home management company might know of comparable properties that better fit your desires and budget..

Although not true for all rental homes, many owners and property managers will make a deal on rates. If the price isn't negotiable, the number of nights might be. This is most effective throughout the off-peak season when many vacation rentals sit vacant.

Read the Contract

Read through the complete contract and make sure you fully understand who is responsible for:

  • Utilities
  • WIFI Access
  • Long Distance Calls
  • Pool and hot tub heating
  • Pay Per View Movies
  • Cleaning services and housekeeping
  • Trash Pickup (and which day?)
  • Maintenance policies
  • Key exchange
  • Parking Space

Be sure that your quote includes all taxes and fees.

If you want to Cancel

Ensure that you are familiar with the cancellation policy prior to booking. You will probably be offered trip insurance. Trip insurance guards the renter against emergency situations and weather events, It provides peace of mind should tragedy strike.

Complete the Booking

Once you think you've found "the one", begin the booking process. You'll probably need to submit a security deposit at time of reservation.

Get Contact Information

Put the property manager's contact information into your cell phone and wallet for quick access to answers during your stay.

Congratulations on reserving your vacation home! You're on the way to a terrific vacation!

During your Stay

  • Take pictures on your arrival. To make sure no damages are associated with your visit, make a record of any trouble spots of the property. We also suggest promptly calling the rental home manager with a report of any wear and tear, together with your request for any necessary fixes. This may protect against conflicts during checkout.
  • You could need instructions for a gas fireplace, Television set or spa. Contact your home manager. They are there to help. A quick phone call helps prevent many complications.
  • Please be considerate of the neighborhood. Residents will probably be as friendly to you as you are respectful of them. Respecting late-night quiet hours and vehicle parking rules can make a trip considerably more pleasant.
  • Ask a local. Natives can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best pizza, have a great night out, or the best areas for wildlife?
  • Remember to protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental secured when you are away, exactly like you would at home.

At the end of your stay

  • You should make sure you've packed everything. Inspect drawers, bath cabinets and cabinets.
  • Make sure to walk through the rental one last time and look for damages. If it is possible, do this walk-out inspection with the property owner present. If the property owner is not available, make certain to take photos of the property to record its condition.
  • How was your getaway? Most property management companies and rental search sites make it easy for customers to give reviews. If the property and/or property manager was excellent, they will appreciate your positive reviews. If something went wrong, we advise being kind but completely honest in regards to your stay. Top owners and managers will work hard to fix the situation.

Iterate

Did everyone have a blast? We hope this guide helped you find a fantastic rental home. Maybe the rental wasn't ideal, and you will better understand how to refine your search next time.
