Tips and Tricks to get the optimal Southport vacation home experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is the most expensive season in Oak Island. To find the best rental within budget, we strongly suggest reserving in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Southport vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Owners sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group.
  • Booking websites usually offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Southport area visitor guide magazines which include special offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Southport area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Filter your rental search:

  • To start, have your family agree to dates and a max budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. A Wave From It All: Island Home with Private Saltwater Pool, Fenced Yard, Fish C has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Southport vacation rental search.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available online. If not, reach out to the property owner before you book the rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or costs could be applied to your agreement.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. .

Some things to know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. Put the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of issues.
  • Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let burglars ruin your family vacation.
  • Upon check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Double-check the property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a fantastic vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
