Tricks and tips for getting the perfect rental home experience:

Find your perfect rental home:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are high season in Oak Island. To find the best value, change your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Southport area visitor guides which will include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Southport visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Planning, picking, and booking the perfectvacation home:

  • Start by selecting potential vacation weeks and a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. OCEANFRONT-7BR\/6.5BA Home-Elevated POOL-Elevator-Dog Friendly-Sleeps 24 has 7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally available on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before booking the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property management company about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Visiting for a specific event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .

Know before you go:

  • Get the host's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few concerns.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Document any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if there is a dispute.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected everything. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Hosts rely on great reviews to drive future reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
