Modest covered porch on back, deck with constructed-in bench seating and furnishings, enormous backyard with plenty of parking and a huge new front deck. Close to shopping and eateries. Located near the beach, this vacation home is in Long Beach, a neighborhood in Oak Island. Oak Island Golf Club and Founders Club at St. James Plantation are worth checking out if an activity is on the agenda, while those looking for area attractions can visit North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher and Bald Head Island Information Center.   • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.

Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses.   • Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed everything at check-out. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and look for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
