Tips and Tricks for getting the best vacation rental experience:

Find your best deal:

  • The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are booked very early. Reserving your rental property up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your vacation rental.
  • To book the largest vacation home within your budget, we strongly suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular attractions. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Property management companies typically offer customers an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Look for your local Southport visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines have offers and deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Narrow your Search:

  • Begin by choosing vacation dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Stairway to Historic Charm! has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, call the host before reserving the rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to establish what bed configuration is optimal for your vacation.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property manager about pets before booking.
  • If there's a particular Southport beach you crave, look for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Tips to have a wonderful stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Add a note with the instructions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents lots of concerns.
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Note any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if there is a dispute.
  • Be respectful. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host isn't available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on great ratings to compel new reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your experience find their best rental home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
