Tips and Tricks to get the perfect Southport rental home experience:

When to go & When to book:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is the most expensive season in Oak Island. Book your vacation in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
  • Booking websites often offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

How to select the best vacation rental:

  • First, have your family agree to dates and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Stay Awhile: Charming Home on Island's East End, Short Drive to Beach and Waterw has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Southport rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before you reserve the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly property. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking

Tips to have a fantastic stay:

  • Get the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Lock your vacation home while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • Note any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be very helpful if there is a dispute.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a fantastic resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Double-check the property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at departure. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Leave feedback! Hosts rely on great ratings to compel future bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
