Strategies to get the very best Southport rental experience:

Finding your perfect rental home:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Southport area. To get the best value, try changing your trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer great weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Southport vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Many rental management companies supply Southport area visitors guide magazines which often include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Southport visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

How to choose the best rental in the Southport area:

  • Select your vacation week and max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. THE SHOAL SHACK - Oak Island, NC has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Southport rental home search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible online. Otherwise, contact the property manager before you book the home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If there's a specific Southport destination you are enamored with, browse properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Usually, property managers charge additional pet fees.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. Put the host's information in your smartphone.
  • At Check-in, document any damages to the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few issues.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a great source for finding the best local scenic spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental while you're away. Protect your property!
  • Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and look for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
